they either
a) charge the advertiser more for those kinds of ads,
b) are making ad money hand over fist, and can afford to splurge
c) are using this as a test bed of some sort for their entry into telephony (which would then be the Next Big Thing)

Those are probably what I would have come up with, except for the third one… I keep thinking Google is done growing in various orthogonal dimensions.
